CONNAUGHT v FRAMINGHAM EARL

Connaught finished the league season with a defeat at Frmaingham Earl on Wednesday 28 March by 51-62 and 2-8

Sheila Bragg, Christine Musk and Ty Musk won 19-11 against M Blaizer

Gordon Wilcox, Hazel Banks and Peter Hambling lost 9-11 against K Bunn

Alison Rush, Ron Maddern and Ralf Ramm lost 12-21 against R Lumley

Alan Marshall, Russell Hales and Ken Lurcock lost 11-19 against D Bunn

The above are bare, telephoned details and no more information can be given.

An undistinguished South Norfolk season ended on an undistinguished note as another improvised side slid to defeat. From the scores it seems that Gordon Wilcox's match was the key to a better result but a close match was lost by 2 shots. There were just 4 regular Breckland 'A' players in the side fielded and although club policy remains "mix and match" for this league we need to field at least 6 'A' players to be competitive, especially away from home. It is a mistake to treat this league lightly; Hempnall are light years apart from everybody else but all clubs can field useful players and at home will beat Connaught sides which crumble on away mats. Next season will give an opportunity to take stock and give more direction and cohesion to the South Norfolk side. Since entering it Connaught have been loyal and keen members but this season our playing standards have lapsed.

CONNAUGHT v THURTON

Connaught lost at Thurton on Monday 12 March by 50-61 and 2-8.

These bare details have been pulled off the county website because not all our match cards currently are available

CONNAUGHT v HORSFORD

Connaught beat Horsford at home on Monday 13 February by 55-35 and 7-3

Mat 1 Steve Hall, Hazel Banks and Ken Lurcock lost 8-14 against R Frank

Mat 2 Gordon Wilcox, Russell Hales and Heather Winup won 11-7 against V Webster

Mat 1 S Bragg, Christine Musk and Ty Musk won 26-4 against M Dale

Mat 2 A Marshall, P Hambling and S Parsons drew 10-10 against C Woodhouse

Home advantage always seems to dominate Connaught v Horsford matches and this one was little different with some of Horsford's "heavy wood" players, so devastating on their own mats, failing to adjust.
Connaught had a last minute panic when Ron Maddern phoned to say his car had broken down in the middle of Attleborough and he was sorting things out;  if possible, he would prefer not to play! Many thanks to Sylvia Parsons for responding immediately to the club's call, and with due respect to Ron the change would not weaken the side! Ken Lurcock moved across to play with Steve Hall and Sylvia slotted in as 2 to Alan Marshall.

With Steve just back from two weeks Cuban holiday and with Hazel and Ken not frequent players nowadays, the first triple on Mat 1 had a "do your best" look about it and thus it proved. Connaught won 7 ends but were contained to 8 shots while Horsford managed 1 x 4 and 2 x 3 amongst their 8 winning ends. Russell and Heather had had a dreadful time against Watton the day before, but with Russell steadier and Heather having a really good match Gordon had enough support to consolidate well and lead Connaught to a close and tense win. Over the first 14 ends Connaught had 1 x 2 and 6 x 1 while Horsford scored 7 x 1; on the last end Connaught broke the spell with good head building and scored 3 for an 11-7 win. After the interval Sheila Bragg, well-supported by Chris and Ty, had one of those devastating wins when she is in totally ruthless mood. Connaught stormed into a 20-0 lead after 8 ends, with 4 on end 6 and 5 on end 7 magnifying the shots difference. The match became more normal after that as Horsford got into it and Connaught won the last 7 ends by just 6-4. With Peter Hambling leading, with Alan Marshall in good recent form and with Sylvia Parsons a newly-recruited 2, Connaught's triple on Mat 2 looked very strong. An 8-3 lead after 8 ends was pointing to victory but it was not to be. Horsford had never crumbled and their triple, adjusting well to the conditions, eased their way back until Connaught found themslves 9-10 down after 14 ends. A single shot win on the last end  enabled a relieved Connaught triple to draw the match.

CONNAUGHT v WATTON

Connaught lost by 35-52 and 2-8 at Watton on Sunday 12 February

Mat 1 Peter King, Russell Hales and Heather Winup lost 4-20 against J Hunter

Mat 2 Alison Rush, James Haylock and Chris Haylock won 15-9 against R Braham

Mat 1 Alan Marshall, Peter Hambling and Ken Lurcock lost 6-12 against D Paffey

Mat 2 Sheila Bragg, Christine Musk and Ty Musk lost 10-11 against  M Hunter

This was a drab defeat for Connaught with the only highlight being the win for Alison Rush and the father and son Haylock combination. Alison has settled in well with the two inexperienced players who are rising to the occasion match by match. James is drawing very well at lead and father, Chris, has added to his variety of shots as he starts to master the tactics of the game. Alison with good support is a fine player.

It is best not to dwell on the defeat suffered by Peter King's triple; only three ends were won in a poor display.

After the interval Connaught were hoping that Sheila Bragg's experienced triple would win by a healthy shots margin, but it was not to be in a tight match, where only 1s and 2s were scored and Connaught won 7 ends against 8. 1-5 down after 5 ends and 6-9 down after 11 ends, Connaught battled on to lead 10-9 with one end to play. Unfortunately for them  two shots were dropped on the last end.

Alan Marshall's match was another tight affair. Connaught won 6 ends all by a single shot, and Watton had 7 x 1, 1 x 2 and 1 x 3. sadly for Connaught the dropped 3 came on the last end as 6-9 down became 6-12

CONNAUGHT v MULBARTON

Connaught beat Mulbarton at home on Monday 29 January by 79-34 and 10-0

Mat 1 Gordon Wilcox, Ron Maddern and Heather Winup won 14-11 against R Thornhill

Mat 2 Alan Marshall, Peter Hambling and Ken Lurcock won 24-7 against J Dean

Mat 1 Joyce Hazell, Hazel Banks and John Winup won 19-9 against S Foster

Mat 2 Alison Rush, James Haylock and Chris Haylock won 22-7 against G Thorpe

Connaught had had to do some reshuffling given that Connaught 'A' were playing a Norwich Cup match at Wymondham on the same evening and given other absences from the usual squad. No real problems were found in fielding a side and this shows the depth of Connaught's short mat resources. Bottom of the league Mulbarton were well-beaten but proved good company and there were encouraging signs for them. Quite clearly they were fielding some new players and had recruited quite a few after an open day last year. Mulbarton is a large village on the outskirts of Norwich but have still struggled for numbers; working hard to recruit is the way forward. Other village sides have to do this or their days are numbered. Connaught's own depth does not come through accident - once more in April the club will be flooding Attleborough with marketing for the outdoor season and most outdoor bowlers will then take up short mat.

Gordon Wilcox's match was the closest and the home side prevailed despite winning just 6 of the 15 ends. Gordon had played lead for Connaught 'A' the previous day and had to adjust as skip! Ron was a bit "iffy", but generally steady, and Heather's forehand frailty was shown up on Mat 1. Captains really must put her at lead where her backhand is better than most. Gordon was able to save well on several ends; Mulbarton were restricted to 1s and 2s whereas Connaught managed 4 x 3

Peter Hambling's accuracy at lead drew gasps of astonishment from the watching Mulbarton players, albeit he was largely unopposed, and Alan Marshall had one of those dream matches at skip. The Mulbarton 2 made a fight of it and eventually moved to skip. Ken was under no pressure and had some reasonable drawing shots at 2 but is in a weak state at present and perhaps should not be playing.

After a good match at Wymondham the previous day John Winup played very well at 2 to Joyce Hazell who concentrated hard and consolidated soundly. Hazel at lead was obviously ill, so much was she out of breath, and was a bit inaccurate; she remains very competitive and rallied well to bowl five good finishing ends.

Alison Rush had a good win and is another form player at present. When on song she plays with real pace and flair. She was very well-supported by the Haylock father and son combination. James (son) and Chris (father) have proved very good members since starting outside in the summer and have adapted well to short mat. James has an excellent and grooved delivery (thank you, Geoff Randle, for the summer coaching) and rightly is being made to learn at lead. The club must nurture him properly, winter and summer, and in league matches put him with experienced and knowledgeable players. We must also be mindful of his GCSEs this summer. Chris, after playing in the internal leagues and some South Norfolk matches, is adjusting well to the pace of short mat and his drawing has improved enormously. He must still beware of bringing the arm across the body

CONNAUGHT v SAXLINGHAM

Connaught won at home to Saxlingham on Monday 9 January by 67-42 and 8-2

Mat 1 Derek Liles (skip), Phil King and Ron Maddern won 22-4 against M Hobbs

Mat 2 Alan Marshall (skip), Steve Hall and H Winup lost 14-15 to G Payne

Mat 1 S Bragg (skip), Christine Musk and Ty Musk won 13-10 against J Torbitt

Mat 2 A Rush (skip),  H Banks and C Haylock won 18-13 against A Banham

CONNAUGHT v THURTON

Connaught won at home to Thurton on Monday 21 November by 71-31 and 8-2

Mat 1 Derek Liles, Hazel Banks and Chris Haylock lost 9-12 against J Pidgen

Mat 2 Alan Marshall, Russell Hales and Ken Lurcock won 18-9 against T Howard

Mat 1 Sheila Bragg, Christine Musk and Ty Musk won 17-6 against A George

Mat 2 Alison Rush, Heather Winup and Steve Hall won 27-4 against K McClintogh

Derek Liles found himself playing something of a lone hand against Thurton's strongest triple, with Hazel a trifle wayward and Chris still learning the game. Nevertheless the Connaught players did well to contain the shots margin to just 3.

The other triples all played very well for their wins, concentrating throughout their matches against opposition uncomfortable on Connaught's mats.

Alison's win was a huge one, with the Connaught players both combining well and having good individual matches. Heather was spot on and should always play at lead where she can concentrate on the backhand draw;

Steve had a welcome return to form after some dodgy matches recently and Alison was able to consolidate from strength.

It was sad to see old adversary, Trevor Howard, suffering badly from vertabrae problems in the spine and in severe pain.

It was also sad to hear from  Thurton  that the club is likely to pull out of the league next year on account of falling playing numbers. Sadder still to hear that schoolboy players had left the club after being ridiculed by their friends. And who says that bowls does not have an image problem?

CONNAUGHT v HEMPNALL

Connaught lost at home to Hempnall on Wednesday 16 November by 37-75 and 0-10

Mat 1 Sheila Bragg, Christine Musk and Ty Musk lost 12-19 against C Archer

Mat 2 Steve Hall, Heather Winup and Peter King lost 11-14 against N Davidson

Mat 1 Alison Rush, Ron Maddern and Chris Haylock lost 7-22 against C Mann

Mat 2 Alan Marshall, Hazel Banks and Ken Lurcock lost 7-20 against P Baker

The match result and overall shots were almost identical to last week's defeat at Hempnall. By all accounts Connaught did not play quite as well at home, although two triples came reasonably close. Sheila Bragg was 1-10 down after 6 ends but a switch with Ty at some point led to a recovery and a deficit of just 12-15 after 14 ends; a dropped 4 on the last end was a disappointing finale.

Steve Hall was 2-10 down after 6 ends, more or less keeping pace with Sheila, and 3-12 down after 9. A good recovery then gave Connaught 8-2 over the last 6 ends.
After the interval the two Connaught triples did their best but were simply outgunned. Latecomers to the match sensed a slightly mooted atmosphere, with both sides playing seriously but with results in no doubt. Analysis shows that only  Sheila's triple plays regularly for Connaught's Breckland 'A' side and of course Peter King is a Wymondham regular. Of the remaining 8, 6 are regulars in Connaught 'B' and 2, Hazel and Chris, play just in the SNL side. That reflects the squad composition and the fact that several players opted to give the South Norfolk a miss this year. The side is still capable of a mid-table finish because it will beat most SNL opposition at home.

The tone of this report is similar to last week's and is not sour grapes; Hempnall are an excellent side but need to be tested

CONNAUGHT v WATTON

Connaught played Watton at home on Monday 14 November and won by 62-44 and 6-4.

Mat 1 Steve Hall, Heather Winup andH Banks lost 5-18 to M Hunter

Mat 2 Derek Liles, Ron Maddern and A Rushlost 8-16 to M Dibble

Mat 1 Sheila Bragg, Christine Musk and Ty Musk won 27-4 against J Hunter

Mat 2 Alan Marshall, Peter Hambling and Ken Lurcock won 22-6 against B Quantrell

These brief details were inadequate for the press report deadline and have not been included

CONNAUGHT V HEMPNALL

Connaught lost at Hempnall on Monday 7 November by 33-75 and 0-10

Mat 1 Steve Hall, Heather Winup and Mike Parsons lost 5-22 against R Parker

Mat 2 Sheila Bragg, Christine Musk and Ty Musk lost 10-15 against R Harrowing

Mat 1 Derek Liles, Ron Maddern and Peter King lost 7-22 against C Mann

Mat 2 Alan Marshall, Peter Hambling and Ken Lurcock lost 11-16 against N Davidson

Given Connaught's "mix them up" selection policy for its SNL side this was a predictable result.

Analysis shows that in the two close matches Connaught won 8 of the 15 ends but lacked Hempnall's ability either to contain or to break up the head decisively.

Alan Marshall's triple did particularly well, pulling up to 11-12 after 14 ends but unfortunately dropping 4 on the last end.

In the other two matches, both lost decisively, the best face to put on it is that the Connaught players did apply themselves and make Hempnall play good shots.

Hempnall did have to field another side on the same night, at Brome, but had a very useful outfit at home with Mark Lindsell and Debbie Phillips from Wymondham helping them out.

Hempnall surely need tougher opposition in the South Norfolk League - there is limited appeal in winning 10-0 virtually every match -  and Connaught could provide it with a full-strength side selected for just those two matches. But doing this would require the agreement of the committed squad members and it is unlikely that the club would take this route

CONNAUGHT V HORSFORD

Connaught lost at Horsford on Friday 4th November by 41-57 and 2-8

Mat 3 C Musk, T Musk and S Bragg lost 12-13 to R Franks

Mat 4 H Winup, Phil King and S Hall lost 6-18 to C Woodhouse

Mat 3 H Banks, K Lurcock and A Marshall lost 10-16 to D Woodrow

Mat 4 R Maddern, A Rush and D Liles won 13-10 against V Webster

Not a very good result for Connaught

CONNAUGHT v FRAMINGHAM EARL

Connaught beat Framingham Earl at home on Monday 31 October by 70-29 and 9-1

(brief details culled from press report and these had to be gathered over the 'phone). Unfortunately the match cards have been destroyed and no other record kept; we may be able to retrieve some details from collective memory but a club website can function properly only if details are given to the website reporters

CONNAUGHT V WRENINGHAM

Connaught lost away at Wreningham on 30th October by 36-48 and 2-8

      Mat 1 R Maddern, D Adcock and B Adcock drew 14-14 with J Greenwood

      Mat 2 H Banks, C Haylock and A Rush lost 10-17 to J Bond

      Mat 1 H Winup, J Haylock and S Hall lost 6-31 to G Adcock

Mat 2 Game not played shot awarded 6-6 points 1-1

Ron Diana and Bill started well against J Greenwood and co winning 7 of the first 12 ends to be 14-6 up withWreningham winning 3 ends and a no scoring end, disaster struck on the last 3 ends for Connaught losing 4,2,2 and ending with a 14-14 draw caused by some very good bowling by J Greenwood

Hazel Chris and Alison on mat 2 were up against it, with Wreningham playing their own mats very well and gave Alison little respite: their running wood game was slightly more accurate than Connaught’s and it made the difference, ending with Connaught winning only 5 ends by 2 shots each

Heather James and Steve received a lesson in very precise bowling the Wreningham triple especially G Adcock Wreninghams’ (Skip) allowing Connaught to score on only 4 of the 15 ends

Wreningham is not an easy venue. The home side have some useful players very competent on their own mats. Still an enjoyable contest played in the right way

CONNAUGHT v MULBARTON

Connaught won at Mulbarton on Wednesday 26 October by 74-34 and 9-1

Mat 1 Sheila Bragg, Christine Musk and Ty Musk won 24-5 against S Foster

Mat 2 Gordon Wilcox, Chris Haylock and Hazel Banks drew 13-13 against A Walden

Mat 1 Steve Hall, Heather Winup and Peter King won 21-6 against S Hitchins

Mat 2 Alison Rush, Russell Hales and Ken Lurcock won 16-10 against B Crisp

Connaught had a sizeable win at Mulbarton, fielding a side satisfying the mix and match criteria for SNL matches (Hazel Banks and Chris Haylock play in no other league sides, Peter King  plays Tens for Connaught and Breckland for Wymondham, and the others were the usual blend of 'A' and 'B').

Gordon Wilcox was leading 9-5 after 9 ends but found himself 11-13 down after 14 ends before snatching a draw with 2 on the last end:  some Connaught waywardness was the cause.

Steve Hall also was leading 9-5 after 9 ends and struggling just a little; a switch with Peter King then worked well as Connaught forged ahead.

Alison Rush had a good personal match in her triple's win, while the all-county regular Connaught triple of the Musks and Sheila proved too strong for the home side.

Like Wreningham, Mulbarton is a small village club which battles away year after year with the losses outpacing the wins. Any really talented players, like Paul Baker, tend to move on. Clubs like Connaught, with huge playing resources, do owe a debt to the Mulbartons for supporting league bowls and providing opposition - sounds a bit patronising but  not intended that way

CONNAUGHT v WRENINGHAM

Connaught beat Wreningham at home on Monday 17 October by 112-28 and 10-0

Mat 1 Sheila Bragg, Christine Musk and Ty Musk won 34-5 against G Rimes (?spelling)

Mat 2 Derek Liles, Ron Maddern and Alison Rush won 29-4 against J Bond

Mat 1 Steve  Hall, Heather Winup and Peter King won 25-10 against G Adcock

Mat 2 Alan Marshall, Chris Haylock and Ken Lurcock won 24-9 against J Greenwood

Although a tricky proposition on home mats, Wreningham generally do not travel well and went down heavily against a Connaught side which did as it should and concentrated to the end. Chris Haylock, who started bowls outside in the summer, made his debut in a short mat league match and played very steadily. Wreningham are small in numbers and struggle a bit but are right to play in this league and offer their members more than just roll-ups on home mats.

CONNAUGHHT v SAXLINGHAM

Connaught lost at Saxlingham on Monday 3 October by 51-53 and 3-7

Rink 1 John Mitchell, Heather Winup and Derek Liles lost 12-18 against G Briggs

Rink 2 Ron Maddern, John Winup and Alison Rush lost 7-12 against A Banham

Rink 1 Hazel Banks, Steve Hall and Alan Marshall drew 15-15 against J Torbitt

Rink 2 Christine Musk, Ty Musk and Bill Adcock won 17-8 against G Payne

Before the interval Connaught were a trifle off-song on Saxlingham's new Wyegreen mats (fairly as those mats played). Derek was 1-12 down after 7 ends and struggling at lead before staging a spirited recovery. In Alison's match the opposition had a lead badly off-form but neither Ron nor John, although steady, took sufficient advantage. In a low-scoring encounter, in which neither side scored more than 1 or 2, Saxlingham edged it second half. The experienced Bill Adcock triple played very well to lead 14-3 after 9 ends before Saxlingham came back a bit. The drama of the evening came on Mat 1, the last to finish (not surprisingly given Steve Hall's running debate with Alan!). Connaught dropped 2, 2 and 5 on three dreadful opening ends but came back brilliantly to level at 9-9 after 8 ends. In a ding-dong after that Connaught went into the last end 13-15 down and bowled superbly to hold a good 6 with Saxlingham's last wood to come; John Torbitt managed to cut down from 6 to 2 by coming off a side wood. What could have been a 6-4 to Connaught became a 3-7 defeat. Saxlingham are by no means the strongest team in the SNL but are a steady side at home; the defeat shows that Connaught need to field strongish sides even to finish mid-table
