INVITATION SHIELD 2010
Finals Day 21st August 2010
The final and play-off took place on Saturday 21 August
PLAY-OFF 3rd/4th PLACE
Ashill beat Diss 68-49
Rink 1 C Breeze lost 12-23 against P Barrett-Ward
Rink 2 A Willer won 23-17 against E Rawsthorne
Rink 3 B Hall won 33-9 against C Manning
Two matches were well-fought, with Pam Barrett-Ward playing well for Diss on Rink 1 The score after 18 ends on Rink 2 was 17-17 but Ashill came through well over the last three ends. Ashill were far too strong for Diss on Rink 3 in a match which determined the result.
FINAL
Connaught were favourites to beat Bradenham in the final but came unstuck against the perceived underdogs of the competition to lose 56-63
Rink 4 Sheila Bragg, Margaret Goode, Mike Parsons and Derek Liles lost 17-22 against R McJackson, P Middleton, B Shinfield and M Ramm
Rink 5 Bill Adcock, Diana Adcock, David Warne and Sylvia Parsons won 19-16 against T Lee, P Ward, K Tanfield and T Beaumont
Rink 6 Jim Ross, Rita Secker, Carol Tipton and Owen Secker lost 20-25 against J Foster, P Foster, B Simson and D Prestley
Bill Adcock's match was very even throughout. Ends 13 (3 shots) and 14 (2 shots) gave Connaught a 15-9 lead which Bradenham manged to trim down a little. Sheila Bragg seemed on the way to a win at 17-11 after 15 ends but a disastrous finish saw the rink drop 11 shots in losing the final 6 ends. From 12-9 up after 9 ends Jim Ross went 12-23 down after 15 ends in another disastrous sequence. Some recovery was made but this concided with Sheila Bragg's collapse on Rink 3. There is little point in dwelling on Connaught's travails on the day; it is more gracious to point to Bradenham's good and determined play. Bradenham had knocked out competition favourites, Ashill, and had then beaten the home side in the final. All this from a club with nowhere near Connaught's playing resources. Undoubtedly they "wanted it" badly and this showed against a home side which seemed rather laid back
The opening matches took place on Saturday 7 August, with Ashill drawn against Bradenham and Connaught against Diss.
Ashill were the bookies' favourites to beat Bradenham but on the day could not hold a determined Bradenham side and lost by 50-70.
Rink 1 A Willer lost 12-26 against J Foster
Rink 2 C Breeze won 22-20 against J Lee
Rink 3 R Bailey lost 16-24 against R McJackson
Connaught beat Diss 65-54 on the adjoining rinks
Rink 4 Bill Adcock, Diana Adcock, Gary Goode and Sylvia Parsons won 25-19 against B Earrye
Rink 5 Jim Ross, Rita Secker, Carol Tipton and Owen Secker won 20-17 against M Howard
Rink 6 Sheila Bragg, Margaret Goode, Alan Marshall and Derek Liles won 20-18 against E Rawsthorne
All three matches were close and rather topsy-turvy on the way the scoreboards changed.
Bill Adcock was 5-15 down after 9 ends and dropped a hot-shot 8 on end 6. Connaught rallied well from then on, with a 6 on end 17 bringing them the lead for the first time at 20-17 and that lead was reinforced.
Jim Ross had the reverse experience, 12-0 up after 7 ends but just hanging on after losing a series of mainly low-scoring ends.
Sheila Bragg dropped 5 on end 8 to go 5-12 down but a good spell brought a 17-12 lead after 15 ends. Diss took over again and Connaught were 17-18 down after 19 ends; a 2 and 1 finish secured the home side a hard-fought win.
The final and 3rd/4th play-off matches take place on Saturday 21 August 2.30 pm start
